To All CAYSA Local Association Presidents:
As you may be aware, last night three players at Lake Travis Youth Association were injured in a lightning strike. This lightning strike appears to have come from nowhere, as the skies were clear above the field at the time of the incident. At last report the players were recovering, but one experienced cardiac arrest following the strike and had to be revived. He remains in the hospital. Certainly our thoughts and prayers are with these young players and their families.
As the season begins, please review the following materials from US Soccer on lightning safety and review your club's lightning and weather policies.
It is vital that clubs have a clear line of communication for lightning and other weather related issues. In addition, for clubs that permit coaches to locate their own practice areas that may be away from your association controlled fields, I recommend that you have a "black flag" policy in place that lets the association cancel all activity for the evening, even if it is not scheduled at your fields. Also, please make sure coaches understand that even when fields are open for play, the coaches are empowered to make whatever decisions they feel are in the best interest of player safety. They do not need to wait for a club decision to cancel practice or pull the kids off the field!
One way that CAYSA can assist and serve our member clubs is by helping share information and best practices between our members. If your club has a weather policy that you believe is effective and helpful, and would like to share it with our other members, please send it on to me so we can make it available for the benefit of our membership and the young players that we serve.
